Agitos Foundation in supporting the development of Athletics in Rwanda

Classifiers for athletes on National level

Agitos Foundation started its activities of developing sports and changing life in Rwanda in 2012 during a regional training camp for youngstars with disabilities in different sports and Youth Coordinaters from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, D.R. Congo and Rwanda the host country.

In 2013, NPC Rwanda got a support grant from AGITOS Foundation with the main objective of creating the pathways for increasing the number of athletes participating in IPC Athletics World Championships and Paralympic Games focussing on Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Classifiers for athletes on National level

At the moment, NPC Rwanda has trained 10 local classifiers, 21 coaches and officials on community level, 3 regional classifiers and 3 coaches trained by IPC experts in Nairobi - Kenya 2013

This year 2014 & 2015, NPC Rwanda is focussing on the implementation of what coaches and classifiers have learnt last year 2013 &2014, through organizing the first Initial Athletics National Camp, First Edition of Kigali Para-Athletics Meeting in 2015 and different preparation camps before participating in major competitions.

These activities will give to the athletes the opportunity to qualify for All African Games in Congo Brazaville 2015, IPC Grand Prix in Tunis, IPC Athletics World Championship 2015 and Paralympic Games in Rio 2016.

Recent Achievements

  • During the training camp, the 150 athletes got opportunity to be classified by Regional and National classifiers, and they are registered on IPC Athletics Data Management System and on NPC Rwanda General Database,
  • Increased number of participants in competitions and para-sport activities from grass roots to elite level throughout Rwanda. (from 15 Paralympic in 2012 to 30 in 2016)

  • Increased number of women athletes participating
  • in national and international Athletics competitions; from 0% in 2012 to 30% in 2016
  • Every year from 2014, a national competition is organized “Kigali Para-Athletics Meeting”
  • A clear program of the Athlete development and pathways towards major events is established

Through this Program, we are changing life of 900 athletes with disabilities at the end of 2016 by developing Athletics sport disciplines (field, track and racing) in all districts of Rwanda (30) where 30 athletes are followed from each district.
